No, I didn't know Field Marshall Sam Manekshaw, but I lived in an era when he was considered a hero, a larger-than-life figure, may be, the last of the straight-talking, upright officers of the Indian armed forces. He was a gentleman of great charm as I can make out from this post by KVK Murthy moderator of Shakespeare and Company.
